On those lines, several new features came up in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gigxp.com\/why-is-sql-server-2016-is-faster-than-ever\/\" rel=\"noopener\">SQL Server 2016<\/a> setup program. Features like R Studio, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gigxp.com\/sql-server-performance-tuning\/\" rel=\"noopener\">temp DB <\/a>configuration right from the setup are certainly promising. In this post, I am going to talk about new SQL server 2016 installation features walk through.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The first thing that you would notice is that SQL Server Management is not included in the software package. You will need to click on the &#8220;<strong>Install SQL Server Management Studio<\/strong>&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/mt238290.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"external external_icon\">link<\/a>\u00a0to go to the Microsoft site to download the latest version.<\/p>\n\n<p>New Standalone R Server is also included in the software package. It allows you to install R Server for advanced analytics\u00a0purposes. The <strong>maintenance menu<\/strong> is mostly unchanged from the previous editions. You get the regular upgrade and repair options as you did before.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Also Read: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gigxp.com\/why-is-sql-server-2016-is-faster-than-ever\/\">Why SQL Server 2016 is Faster than Ever!<\/a><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On the <strong>Tools<\/strong> menu, you have a lot of standalone tools included in the package. For example, <strong>MAP toolkit<\/strong>, <strong>PowerPivot<\/strong> configuration tools for SharePoint 2016 on-premises. SharePoint 2013 is not compatible with SQL Server 2016 at the time of writing this post. Finally, under the &#8220;<strong>Options&#8221;<\/strong> menu, you have additional options to select x86 or x64 edition of SQL Server to be installed.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"SQL_2016_Feature_Selection_Menu\"><\/span>SQL 2016: Feature Selection Menu<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1832 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.faceofit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/sql-2016-2-1-1024x805.png\" alt=\"New SQL Server 2016 Installation Features Walk through\" width=\"840\" height=\"660\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see from the above screenshot, apart from the <strong>R-Services<\/strong> (In-Database) and <strong>Standalone<\/strong>, you have the <strong>Polybase\u00a0<\/strong>connector. It allows you to connect to unstructured data like NoSQL etc. This feature already existed on the SQL Server Database appliance, a.k.a PDW (a.k.a APS).<\/p>\n<p>In-Database R services provide you with basic libraries that\u00a0allow you to\u00a0execute R scripts on SQL Server. In case if you want to use a fully featured R server, install the standalone edition.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Server_Configuration\"><\/span>Server Configuration<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1833\" src=\"http:\/\/www.faceofit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/sql-2016-1-1-300x227.png\" alt=\"New SQL Server 2016 Installation Features Walk through\" width=\"800\" height=\"604\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a sleek new feature incorporated into the server configuration menu, called &#8220;<strong>Grant Perform Volume Maintenance Task Privilege<\/strong>.&#8221; This feature allows &#8220;<strong>Instant File Initialization<\/strong>&#8221; With this option checked, you get the following <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gigxp.com\/why-is-sql-server-2016-is-faster-than-ever\/\" rel=\"noopener\">performance<\/a> benefits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a new database.<\/li>\n<li>Adding additional Data files, log\u00a0files\u00a0to an already existing database.<\/li>\n<li>In case if you increase the size of an existing file which includes the &#8220;Auto-grow&#8221; operations.<\/li>\n<li>When you are restoring a database or a filegroup.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Database_Engine_Configuration_TempDB_Tab\"><\/span>Database Engine Configuration: TempDB Tab<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1834\" src=\"http:\/\/www.faceofit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/sql-2016-3-1-1024x804.png\" alt=\"New SQL Server 2016 Installation Features Walk through\" width=\"840\" height=\"660\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A lot has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gigxp.com\/sql-server-2016-new-features\/\" rel=\"noopener\">said and written<\/a> about temp DB and its benefits of splitting up into multiple dbs. You can now spawn multiple temp DB files from the setup menu along with the auto-growth settings. You will no longer have to change these settings post installation like in earlier releases.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Analysis_Services_Configuration\"><\/span>Analysis Services Configuration<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1836\" src=\"http:\/\/www.faceofit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/sql-2016-4-1-1024x806.png\" alt=\"New SQL Server 2016 Installation Features Walk through\" width=\"840\" height=\"661\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is an additional &#8220;<strong>PowerPivot Mode<\/strong>&#8221; option. It is not a new feature\u00a0but rather an old one that\u00a0existed way back since SQL Server 2008 R2. It was the instance dedicated for rendering SharePoint On-premises Power-Pivot excel data models. It used to be an option under &#8220;PowerPivot&#8221; for SharePoint 2013 shared feature. With the new standalone option, it makes more sense and less confusion.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Although this is not an exhaustive list, we tried to cover most of the features added (and removed) in the SQL Server 2016 setup installer.
